If you love Korean food, then you probably love Tteokbokki (spicy rice cake). It is one of my favorite Korean dishes and I crave them A LOT, so it is natural for me to try and make them on my own. However, I always get the sauce wrong and end up failing. Even when I try the premade sauce package, they are either too spicy or too salty for my liking.

A couple of days ago, I thought of giving it a shot again and this time I made the sauce myself. It turned out really really really good and easy to make so I thought of sharing it here for you to try!

This is my way of making this and it might not be anywhere near authentic, so please keep that in mind. Also, I do not measure at all when I cook which a lot of the times work better for me compared to when I do measure, so sorry in advance that I cannot give you the measurements.

The Recipe

Ingredients

・Rice cake noodles

・Sesame Oil

・Gochujang (Korean Chilly Paste)

・Broth or Stock: I use fish broth powder for mine.

・Water

Optional Ingredients

・Ramen noodles

・Korean Fish Cake

・Boiled eggs

・Cayenne pepper powder for more spice

・one minced garlic loaf: you do not need this but I put it in and it was amazing.

・cheese

Instructions:

  1. If you have a frozen rice cake, make sure to soften them up in water before cooking them.
  2. Cook the garlic with sesame oil until it gets golden (This step is optional).
  3. Put some water and broth (if it’s not a powder broth than you might not need water), and let them simmer for a bit.
  4. Then put your rice cakes inside to soften them up.
  5. Put in your Gochujang (Korean Chilly Paste) until your ideal spice and taste. Make sure to start off less so you don’t go overboard.
  6. drizzle in a little bit of sesame oil for the flavor and scent.
  7. After getting it to the taste you like, you are all set! I like it spicy so I added some cayenne pepper powder, but this is totally optional.

A lot of the recipes tell you to put in sugar and soy sauce which you can definitely do if you want it on the sweet side, but I always didn't like how it tasted when I do put them in. I tried this recipe to experiment and I couldn't believe how good it was! The broth adds a lot of flavors so you do not need to put anything else to perfect it, but you can put in more seasoning or sauces of your choice!

Adding ramen noodles, Korean fish cake, boiled eggs, or cheese will make this dish fancier so I highly recommend doing that! All you have to do is put more water and Gochujang (Korean Chilly Paste) in that case.

I hope I’m informative enough for you to follow through, but if you have any questions, you can leave a comment!

Thank you for reading and I hope you try it out!
